Bayer Leverkusen won 4-0 against Wehen Wiesbaden and advanced to the second round of the DFB-Pokal. New coach Carles Martinez celebrated a successful debut. The team had to be patient at first, but just before the break, Patrick Schick scored the winning goal and relieved the favorites and around 4,000 traveling fans. The Czech striker converted a rebound to a deserved 1-0 lead.
The second half
Still in the fog of the red glowing pyrotechnics ignited by the visiting fans, it went very quickly after the restart: In the first Leverkusen attack in the second half, Schick initially failed with his header on SVWW goalkeeper Noah Brdar. But Lucas Vázquez scored in the follow-up from a narrow angle into the far corner and increased the lead to 2-0.
The substitutes make the difference
The home team, led by coach Daniel Scherning, seemed to have given up, even though Leverkusen took some tempo out of the game with the comfortable lead and increasingly gave the ball to Wiesbaden. Bayer coach Martinez, who was still gesticulating wildly on the sidelines in the first half, now sat relaxed in the coaching zone and brought in fresh forces. Bayer Leverkusen is currently in 6th place in the Bundesliga table with 59 points, 17 wins, 8 draws, and 9 losses from the last season. The team has scored 68 goals and conceded 47 this season, resulting in a positive goal difference of +21. The next opponent is FSV Mainz 05, against whom the team will play on February 20, 2027.
