Match Summary
Bayer Leverkusen defeated third-tier SV Wehen Wiesbaden 4-0 in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. After initial weather difficulties and drizzle, Leverkusen had to work into the game. The first shot for Wiesbaden came from Niklas May, who created the first chance after 19 minutes with a header. Leverkusen celebrated briefly with Schick (14.), who was however offside.
Shortly after the break, Patrik Schick (43.) scored the opening goal for Leverkusen. Immediately after the half-time break, Lucas Vazquez (47.) increased the lead to 2-0. Nathan Tella (69.) and Christian Kofane (79.) sealed the victory. The team played a lively game driven by the tempo of both sides but without major highlights. Leverkusen managed the match and used the few chances efficiently.
Coaching Decisions
Carles Martinez celebrated his first official match as Bayer coach. He replaced captain Robert Andrich with centre-back Edmond Tapsoba as new team leader, while Schick served as his deputy. In the starting XI were the expensive summer signings Miguel Gutiérrez and Afonso Moreira.
During the game Martinez moved with both hands in his pockets along the sideline, occasionally sat on the bench, watched the game, and directed his players. Just before the break he saw the relief when Schick, after a deflected attempt by Ibrahim Maza, found the net.
Outlook
The next Bundesliga opener against promoted side SV Elversberg is scheduled for Saturday at 15:30 on Sky. Martinez hopes for similar efficiency as in the DFB-Pokal. Leverkusen has started the season strongly and shows that the new coaching decisions are paying off.
