At the beginning of the season, Bayer Leverkusen secured a victory against FC Sevilla with a double strike from Patrik Schick in their pre-season friendly. The match, which was attended by 25,193 spectators at the BayArena, ended with a 2:1 win for the German team (0:1). For new coach Carles Martinez, this was his first official game on the bench.
However, the victory was overshadowed by two player injuries. After only about half an hour, U19 national player Montrell Culbreath had to leave the field due to a injury. The 18-year-old striker showed a worried face during the match and hobbled around the pitch several times.
In the second half, former captain Robert Andrich also had to leave the field just ten minutes after his substitution. Back on the field was Victor Boniface, who received much applause, as he filled in for the injured player.
