Bayer Leverkusen plans a new campus on a previously undeveloped part of the company's site in Monheim. The campus will include 10.5 football pitches, a car park and a functional building. The citizens of Monheim are however skeptical and see climate protection reasons and increased traffic volume. The project manager Christian Kautz is part of a Monheim citizen initiative against the campus and is also a direct neighbor of the planned building. The fronts are hardened, a mutual approach seems not possible at the moment. Bayer 04 has been planning and searching for a site for ten years. Because the A1 autobahn will be expanded at the Leverkusener Arena from 2032. Then there will be no space for training and parking areas. For a total of 70 areas around Leverkusen, studies for a campus were created, all were rejected due to different exclusion criteria. The remaining area is located near the Rhine, exactly opposite a large industrial area, where pesticides are researched and developed. Originally, the works club had planned 30 hectares, there are now 14.7 hectares left. The reason: the changed political conditions in Monheim. Anne Dannenberg is responsible for the future project “Bayer 04 Campus”.
