The club confirmed the death with reference to Hermann's family. The entire Bayer 04 family is deeply saddened by the loss of a highly respected person who helped shape football in Leverkusen over many decades, the club wrote, adding that Peter will never be forgotten. Hermann was involved with football in Leverkusen for nearly three decades. He served as interim head coach and assistant coach for the first team, coached the second team, and later worked as a scout.

Stints at Bayern and Dortmund

His career also took Hermann to other German top clubs. He was assistant coach under Jupp Heynckes at FC Bayern Munich during a season when the club won the treble. Later, he assisted Niko Kovac at Bayern. Further stints as an assistant coach included FC Schalke 04 and Hamburger SV. In the summer of 2022, Hermann moved to Borussia Dortmund but left the club in December of the same year for health reasons, ending his coaching career.

Bayer Leverkusen paid tribute to Hermann as an outstanding figure. He was the assistant coach par excellence in Germany, the club wrote, and more renowned and respected in the industry than many a head coach. Hermann also coached youth teams for the German Football Association (DFB).
