Bayer Leverkusen is making significant moves in the transfer market, aiming to strengthen its left-back position following the departure of Alejandro Grimaldo. According to Sky reports, Gutierrez, a compatriot of Grimaldo and currently playing for SSC Napoli, is close to joining the Werkself on a long-term contract.
Transfer Details
The deal with the Italian club has been agreed upon in principle, and Gutierrez, who turns 26 this year, will sign a contract that runs until June 30, 2031. The transfer fee for the young player is estimated at around 30 million euros. Gutierrez is set to undergo his medical examination with Leverkusen on either Monday or Tuesday, after which an official announcement of the deal is expected.
Coach's Recommendation
Carles Martinez, the head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, had already identified Gutierrez as a suitable replacement for Grimaldo. The 25-year-old left-back will be returning to his home country, joining Atletico Madrid, where he will earn around 22 million euros. His contract with Napoli was set to expire in 2030, but he managed to score one goal and provide an assist in 36 official matches last season.
Other Targets
While Gutierrez is the main target for the left-back position, Bayer Leverkusen remains interested in Zakaria El Ouahdi from KRC Genk. The 24-year-old, who participated in the World Cup but played only one match for Morocco as a substitute to PSG's Achraf Hakimi, could be part of the club’s shortlist for this role.
