Jonas Hofmann could leave Bayer Leverkusen before the end of the month. The former Germany international is a target for Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab, whose transfer window remains open until October 12.
Head coach Carles Martinez acknowledged the speculation surrounding the 34-year-old. "It is true that some markets in football are still open," Martinez said. "We will see what happens in the next few days. Jonas knows that too." Hofmann's standing has not improved under the new manager and he was omitted from the Europa League squad. The club would reportedly consider a free transfer, a scenario made more likely by the return of Moussa Diaby.
Martinez on Hofmann's current role
The Spaniard stressed Hofmann's current importance to the squad, however. "He is here now and training with us," Martinez said. "We have some injury problems in that position on the wings and that is why Jonas can help us." Current absentees include Nathan Tella and Guéla Doué.
Hofmann joined Leverkusen from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2023 and won the German league and cup double in his first season under Xabi Alonso. He made 32 league appearances, scoring five goals and providing ten assists. His contract runs until the summer of 2027.
Bayer Leverkusen currently sit eighth in the standings with three points from two matches. Their next fixture is a home match against table neighbours RB Leipzig (9th) on September 20. Leverkusen enter the international break with a record of three wins and two defeats from their last five competitive games.
